EBS Merges Operations with SCS Engineers, Long Beach, CA

Robert P. Stearns and Dan Jonhson announce merger of SCS Engineers and Environmental Business SolutionsSAN DIEGO -- (January 9, 2002) -- Environmental Business Solutions Inc. has merged its operations with Long Beach-headquartered SCS Engineers, announced Daniel E. Johnson, co-founder and president of the San Diego-headquartered environmental consulting firm.

Environmental Business Solutions joined forces with SCS Engineers, a worldwide provider of environmental services, to expand its resources and areas of specialized expertise. For SCS Engineers, which currently does not maintain an office in San Diego, the merger serves to expand its presence in Southern California.

The merger will not affect the operations, personnel or services currently provided by Environmental Business Solutions. The firm will continue to operate autonomously under its existing name and from same office headquarters located in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.
"We're tremendously excited about this new partnership, as the two companies greatly complement one another," said Johnson, who will continue to serve as principal and founder of Environmental Business Solutions. "SCS Engineers has proven expertise in a number of specialized areas, particularly brownfield remediation, which has been an area of focus for us in recent years."

Environmental Business Solutions currently is serving as the chief consultant for the environmental remediation of a 26-block area contained within the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. The project, part of a $1 billion redevelopment effort to revitalize East Village, encompasses the seven-block site of the new San Diego Padres Ballpark.

Similarly, SCS Engineers has completed such notable brownfield remediation projects as the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., as well as Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona.
"In addition to brownfields, SCS Engineers offers specialized expertise in landfill and landfill gas engineering, solid waste planning and management, asbestos abatement, and methane mitigation," said Johnson. "Their experience in these areas will augment our own resources, while enhancing the level of service we provide to our clients."

Founded in 1970 by Robert P. Stearns, Tom Conrad, and Curtis J. Schmidt, SCS Engineers is an employee-owned, international engineering and construction firm specializing in solid waste management and environmental services. Headquartered in Long Beach, Calif., the company maintains a staff of 350 in 20 offices across the U.S., as well as in Australia and New Zealand. More information is available online at www.scsengineers.com.

Co-founded in 1992 by Daniel E. Johnson, Environmental Business Solutions provides Phase I site assessments, environmental audits, Phase II (soil and/or groundwater) assessments, remediation services, environmental screening, underground storage tank solutions, litigation support, risk assessments, and consulting services for brownfields development, regulatory compliance, storm water compliance, and ISO 14001 qualification.

EBS Sponsors Online Newsletter on Stormwater Pollution Prevention

Visit EBS's online newsletter, Stormwater Reporter, at www.stormwaterreporter.com. Stormwater runoff causes water quality problems, including threats to human health, ecosystems and natural environments around our businesses, homes, and parks. Poor stormwater management can also lead to unnecessary flood damage, creating burdensome costs to landowners and taxpayers.

The Stormwater Reporter synthesizes pertinent regulatory issues, control techniques, and financing options for improving our water quality and region through stormwater management.
